China trip '05: Qingdao

Chinese Gothic

This splendid pile looks as if it should be accompanied by ominous erhu music, while Chinese werewolves lollop across the sinister moors.

In fact this is a center for one of Qingdao's major tourist occupations, which is having your wedding photo taken. In this photo you can't see the rows of earnest grooms and radiant, lacy brides waiting to have photos taken beside the papier-mache cupids, the giant fiberglass hearts pierced by a single arrow, the ornate English letters " L O V E", and other, equally sophisticated, settings.

Tourists

The other tourist attraction is hunting for snails at low tide, I assume for dinner, an occupation that is undertaken with the same serious care as the weddings; as well as at the same places.
