The upper monastery can be reached by climbing a long, long flight of stairs up the mountain. We were short of time, so we took the cable car about 80% of the way. It's just as well; the remaining 20% of the climb left most of us puffing and wheezing, in spite of the encouragement from the rows of trinket vendors lining the path (HELLO HELLO HAVE A NICE DAY YOU LIKE YOU LIKE?). I carried William part of the way, but mostly he walked sturdily along by himself.
