We also went to the Beijing Zoo, which was frankly pretty ghastly and turned my stomach (the sad thing is that this is supposed to be one of the most enlightened Chinese zoos -- I will concede that for the most part actual recipes were not posted beside the animals' cages). However, a zoo that is terrible for the animals can be great fun for an innocent kid, who doesn't realize that a tiger doesn't belong in a 15x15-foot concrete cell; it's much easier to see the animal when they have no way to hide or escape.
